Zill,
Zagat - Castanet
These
ancient musical finger cymbals originated in the Middle East
and have spread to Greece, Spain, and India. When clicked together
between the thumb and middle fingers, they produce a bell-like
tone and are a wonderful accompaniment to Middle Eastern music.
This instrument was made popular by Middle Eastern belly dancers. |

Dumbek,
Tabla - Drum
To Middle
Eastern percussionists, this hand drum is the instrument of choice,
and is one of the most popular instruments found in Middle Eastern
music. It often has a fish skin or plastic head with an elaborately
designed body. It originally got its name for the "dum,
tik" sound it produces when struck with the fingers.

Riq - Tamborine
Originally
played by natives of country side, this instrument is commonly
found is Middle Eastern folk music. It contains cymbals surrounding
its circular body which click together making sounds similar
to its cousin instrument, the tamborine. The head is often made
of sheepskin and is struck with the hand to accompany other Middle
Eastern musical instruments in song and dance.

Oud - Lute
The Oud is
said to be one of the oldest guitars in the world.
It is possibly Persian in origin, and has spread throughout the
Middle East and into Europe as well. This is another popular
instrument often heard in Middle Eastern music, contemporary
and classical. One of the most famous Oud players in the world
is Iraqi musician Mounir Bashir.
